WOSC 8 Hour Race 2017

The WOSC annual 8 Hour Race took place on Sunday 27th September.  For those members who have not competed in the race or not spectated, I will attempt to give you a flavour of what you have missed.  Read about it here.

Les and Graham win!

14:56:17 on Sunday 25 May 2014 was the time at which Les and Graham finished the second race of the day.  To the great surprise, nay amazement, of many it was in fact the winning time.  After the RO had checked, rechecked and checked his calculations once again it was announced that Les and Graham were indeed the winners of the race.  In fact the RO spent so much time performing his calculations that the last race was started late.  Read about it here.

Alexander and the Handbrake

See Alexander's great starts and the magnificent Wayfarer Handbrake demonstrated by Les and Graham.  Read about it here.

Les and Graham unable to sail

Les and Graham were unable to sail on 30 September, which was a beautiful day.

Les was nursing a nasty face wound received at Stockport when he was bitten by an angry dog.  Graham says there are a lot of dogs in Stockport.

Graham, on the other hand had problems with his plumbing.  Les reckons it's Graham's age!

Check out the latest pictures which include: OK Worlds in Denmark, WOSC 8 Hour Race and Sunday 29 July when Les and Graham flew the flag (and the Police turned up).

For future reference Les, as any vexillologist will tell you, the easy way to know if the Union Flag is the correct way up is to look for the fimbriation of the ordinaries.  If the fimbriation is below the saltire in the upper hoist canton, then the flag is being flown correctly.

Sunday 27th January was a fine, warm day following about 10 days of ice and snow.  It was also quite windy and a wonderful opportunity for the 14 or so boats which launched to demonstrate their heavy weather prowess.

Among the many highlights of the day was the capsize just after mark 3 when Jon and Mike managed to get Miffy's nose pointing skywards.  It needs to be in the water to go fast boys!

My pictures taken at WOSC during 2013 will be in individual galleries under this menu tab.

17 February dawned misty and cold.  By the time the mist had burned off it was fairly warm in the sunshine, but still a bit chilly in the shade.

Les and Graham had an excellent lunch of roast pork sandwiches with stuffing.  Both Les and Graham were sure that the stuffing was fruit cake.

The ensuing race proved once again that Team Burton / Parry sail best on full stomachs.  After a pretty good start they managed to reach the windward mark in front of the rest of the fleet and then lead them round the course.

I can only assume that the pork sandwiches were not sufficiently large, as within the space of only five minutes they managed to drop from first to second from last.

Those of you who have followed the exploits of team Burton / Parry will probably agree with me that their best efforts have been made with full stomachs.  For those of you who have not read the report, I recommend that you read about the Haversham Wayfarer Open Meeting in 2012.  Maybe a hangover or two would have helped?

Alexander also had his first outing in his new acquisition, Scruffy.  For the occasion he had a ringer as a crew.  I have no doubt that Alexander will have learned quite a lot.  Guy might also have learned that there is precious little room at the front of a Freddy.  Top tip for Freddy crews - sit facing the stern and don't wear a silly hat!

Shock!  Horror!  Wayfarer using tired old rags beats Albacore with brand new sails (made by dyslexic sailmaker) on the water!

On 24 February Richard and Tom proved beyond any doubt that "Flat is Fast" and powered Les' elderly Wayfarer to the front of the fleet.

In spite of being handicapped by a less than perfect toestrap system on one tack, the intrepid duo managed to keep ahead of Stewart for the whole of the race.  On one tack the toestraps are linked together which meant that all was well when both boys were hiking hard.  When Richard decided he was too tired and wanted a rest, his 18 stone weight was removed from the system leaving poor Tom at only 12 stones floundering with his head in the water.

For those youngsters wanting to see how it should be done, have a look at the pictures.  In fact, Les and Graham should have a look at the pictures too.

It was only later that Stewart kindly pointed out that he was using a suit of brand new sails, whereas Richard and Tom were using tired old rags.  Shame that Mike McNamara is dyslexic.  I wonder what discount Stewart was able to negotiate.  Check out the pictures!

No longer can you blame your boat, Les!
